CHINESE SKY

CHINESE SKY

Entity Identity project. This Project was devised by curator Veerle Wenes and involved eleven Belgian and Dutch designers and artists having their ideas and designs produced in traditional materials by Chinese artisans. Each of the participants spent a month in Beijing where they worked with Chinese craftspeople and local traditional workshops.  The aim of the project was very much to establish a cross-fertilisation between contemporary Western notions and traditional Chinese know-how.
Different things inspired the lightings Dewez designed in Beijing; First, the Beijing ‘s sky, low, foggy, it filters the light and gives the feeling of a ceiling above our heads. The wooden frames of the lamps remind the traditional decorated ceilings. Similar structures are often used in front of windows in order to dim the light. Here, the lightening frame once hung, creates a new space in the room, like a second ceiling. The TLs light is filtered through a paper sheet to recall the misty sky. Eventually, different weavings are tight on the wooden frames; the object will then look differently as it is on or off.
